Often walking distance to the galleries, shops and restaurants of the Grove Arcade in down town Asheville, Historic Montford is popular as a friendly neighborhood with a wonderful mix of Victorian and Arts and Crafts style homes, often built in the 1920s and 1930s sometimes by famous architects. Montford began in 1893. A few years later it became annexed to the city and today, Montford's bounderies are U.S. Routes 19/23, I-240, and Broadway. Montford is know in literary circles for imortalizing residents in Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward Angel. Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of F.Scott Fitzgerald lost her life in a large fire at a Montford hospital in 1948. Thomas Wolfe among other people of note found their resting place at Riverside Cemetery. Montford achieved the designation of 'Historic District' in 1977 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Rankin House at 192 Elizabeth Street is Montford's oldest home, built around 1846. Richard Sharp Smith's work at the end of the 1800s profoundly affected the city's subsequent architectural development. He supervised the design of the Biltmore House, and some homes in Montford were designed by Smith.
