In the Spring through fall, and on the warm winter days, locals and tourists sip coffee from the many local coffee shops. If you are addicted to Starbucks - you will be able to find one, however Asheville's independent locally-owned stores are thriving and make up the mainstay of retail rather than the national brands. For shopping, be sure to visit the downtown block-long Grove Arcade built in the 1920s, a shopping and dining destination in one location with many restaurants and boutiques around the outside and fascinating specialty stores inside. Built in the late 1890s, Historic Biltmore Village features pebble-dash homes once belonging to George Vanderbilt and now featuring elegant restaurants, and interesting boutiques and galleries.

Asheville's diverse music scene ranges from bluegrass native to the area to major national acts, opera, ballet, country music and experimental jazz. Street performers often entertain crowds downtown.

Asheville has been heralded as a the number one city in virtually every category by many respected magazines and authorities.
