However, one thing is for sure, if you or a loved one's disability is expected to be long-term, your home must be able to accommodate you in a comfortable way. NC State claims that "Little housing today, whether single or multi-family, adequately responds to the diverse and ever changing needs of the population". Let's take on the challenge to find you a handicap accessible home already in existence in the Asheville NC area.
Over time, the Fair Housing Act and the North Carolina Accessibility Code are altering the multi-family property industry. Other agencies such as educational institutions are shifting the focus to universal design, which introduces the concept of how to design and remodel to provide access to all, at differing stages of life and levels of 'ability'. For example, many people become injured and suddenly realize they are a prisoner in their own home for the next 3 months when suddenly the bathroom becomes a major challenge, anddoing what would be normally minor things such as hair washing and bathing becomes a huge challenge.
As our population ages, many people will require a master bedroom on the main level and will find it harder to deal with outside steps. Many older people spend periods of time in a wheelchair, and with such a limited amount of homes being able to accommodate a chair this becomes a problem.
